New Collection Item: Radon Detectors

Bridgeville Public Library has added something new and important to our Library of Things – radon detectors that you can check out and use at home!

We now have two EcoBlu Home Radon Detectors available for loan. These compact devices are incredibly user friendly, just plug in the cord, and you’re ready to go!

According to the manufacturer:

  • You’ll get an initial reading in 10 minutes
  • A more reliable measurement in about 1 hour
  • After 10 or more hours of monitoring, accuracy increases to around 90%

The device updates every 10 minutes, giving you a continuous look at your home’s radon levels.

The detectors are available on a first-come, first-served basis, and check out for three weeks. If you’re interested in checking one out, look for the display in our new book area or inquire at the help desk.

Why Test for Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can accumulate indoors, especially in lower levels of homes. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S.

To help raise awareness, we’re proud to be working with CR3- Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction, a national organization dedicated to educating the public about radon risks. They recommend placing the monitor on the lowest level of your home with the windows closed for the most accurate results.

And did you know? CR3’s Pennsylvania representative lives right here in Bridgeville, our very own Jackie Nixon!
